Introduction to the Grammar of English

In a nutshell, this is an excellent text - but one may not want to use it as such. The "students of linguistics" for whom it is intended as "a foundation for more advanced work in theoretical linguistics" had better be ready to earn that title. Although it makes "minimal assumptions about the reader's familiarity with 'traditional grammar'", it makes maximal assumptions about his power to absorb in depth, if he has no sense of grammar already.
